Vegan sourdough garlic bread (not gluten-free) on the side.

This was the most satisfying meal I’ve made in a while. The butternut squash pasta sauce was so rich and delicious. The lasagna noodles were rice noodles, and the melted cheeze on top was Follow Your Heart brand mock mozzarella. It was fantastic.

I brought a lasagna similar to this one to a potluck last night. It was a great opportunity for culinary activism. Bringing a delicious hot dish that caters to omnivores, vegans, and those on a gluten-free diet, as well as having enough to share with the entire group can do a lot to create a positive image of ethical-vegans and of the abolitionist vegan movement.

I’m really tired of this new craze making its way around the internet of humans forcing...

I’m really tired of this new craze making its way around the internet of humans forcing animals to ride surf boards.
With all of the non-dairy, no-animal-product choices supermarkets now offer being a vegan has never been so easy before, right? Wrong! Many vegans don’t know it but a lot of products that seem vegan actually contain animal products such as eggs or milk. Companies get away with labeling and advertising their products as vegan because there is no government regulation requiring these products to meet certain standards. But don’t fret. I’ve compiled a list of Do’s and Don’ts so that every vegan can be supermarket savvy.

Don’t try Boca All American Flame Grilled Burger because it contains milk.

Do try Amy’s All American Veggie Burger.

Don’t try Morningstar Farms Maple Flavored Veggie Sausage, it contains milk and eggs.

Do try LightLife Gimme Lean Ground Sausage Style. You might have to form it into patties and drown in Maple syrup yourself, but at least it’s completely vegan!

Don’t try Galaxy Nutritional Foods Veggy Cheese Alternative, it’s not really an alternative because it contains milk!

Do try Follow Your Heart Cheese Alternative, it even melts like real cheese.

Don’t try Boca Original Chik’n Nuggets, they contain eggs.

Do try Health is Wealth Chicken-Free Nuggets, or for more of a kick try Health is Wealth Chicken-Free Buffalo wings.

Don’t try Galaxy Nutritional Foods Veggy Grated Topping, Parmesan because it contains milk, just like the slices!

Do try Galaxy Nutritional Foods Vegan Grated Topping, but we wary, the package says the “Natural Flavors” are vegan derived but you can never really know for sure!

Don’t try LightLife Smart Sausages Italian Style, they contain eggs.

Do try Tofurky Italian Sausages.

Don’t try LightLife Veggie Burgers, they contain eggs.

Do try Amy’s California Veggie Burger, they’re out of this world!

Don’t try Morningstar Farms Spicy Black Bean Burger, they contain milk and eggs!

Do try Gardenburger Black Bean Chipotle Burger.

Don’t try Morningstar Farms Chik Patties, they also contain milk and eggs.

Do try Gardenburger Breaded Chik’n Patties.

Don’t try Gardenburger Gourmet Tuscany Steaks, they contain milk.

Do try Morningstar Farms Meal Starters Steak Strips.

There are many other vegan-friendly options in the supermarket besides the ones listed here. As food science continues to advance so will our options for tasty, healthy, animal-friendly choices. Until then just remember that the only way to make sure you’re eating vegan is to read the ingredients before you buy!

My dad always complains, “A vegan diet is more expensive than a regular one.” By regular, I’m assuming he means the Standard American Diet (SAD). Could this be because SAD is comprised of mostly animal products, produced with cruel/cheap methods to gain the most profit? Sad.

Sure, a vegan diet containing the same amount of food as an omnivorous equivalent may be more expensive. But how often do people buy cheap food “to save money” and actually save it? In my experience, people spend just as much (if not more) money on a larger amount of food just because it’s cheaper. Necessity is forgotten in the excitement of low prices. Not only does this phenomenon cause us to appreciate our food less (because we’re consuming so much of it), but it tells the food industry, “We don’t care how tasteless the food is, or what you have to do to produce it, just sell it to us cheap and in ridiculous amounts.”

If that’s what you’re about, fine. But that’s not my message. Putting aside my inherited tendency to be “kuripot” (cheap, in Tagalog), I have realized that every time I buy something vegan and not full of crap, I am letting the particular store and the industry know what is up. “Give me the best quality food you can offer. I’ll pay the few extra dollars.”

Vegan biscuits and gravy with soy sausage.
